Vienna airport VIP Hangar 5

The whole VIP terminal consists of the actual VIP-GAC building and two hangars. VIPs no longer have to walk down the gangway in pouring rain. The hangars are designed as service and parking hangars for VIP jets and are spanned by a 75 m cantilevered timber structure.
The architects and planners did not originally envisage it this way. Only the preparation of an alternative quotation by WIEHAG encouraged the interested parties to take the risk. The client gave the go-ahead for the timber construction, with both functional equivalence and a price advantage.
Project description

An aircraft hangar made of timber

The ground plan of the hangar, which is enclosed on three sides, measures 60 m x 75 m. The overall height is 20 m. The 75 m wide and 14 m high door results from the wing spans and vertical fin heights of the aircraft. The construction of the VIP hangar at Vienna Airport was subject to numerous restrictions and special safety requirements, due to its proximity to the "VIP & Business Center" which was already in service. For example, requirements far exceeding the standard had to be met for the maximum vertical deformation of the door frame, as well as for the high dead weight, snow and net loads, as well as unpredictable wind conditions. Connections with fully threaded diagonal screws met the demands superbly.
Timber met all of these requirements, was more economical than alternative materials, and provided convincing ecological arguments. A major advantage was the short erection time of only 3.5 weeks. Due to the low weight of timber, it was possible to pre-assemble much of the construction on the ground.
