Production hall
Penzkofer

In Regen, Lower Bavaria, the construction company Penzkofer decided to invest in a new production hall built to sustainable standards.
WIEHAG Timber Construction was commissioned by the client to construct a two-bay timber hall with a floor area of 1,100 m² and beam spans of over 40 metres.
Task

A production hall built entirely of timber

The new production hall was designed as a two-bay all-timber structure measuring 66 m by 81 m. All columns, beams, purlins, bracing and even the crane runways were constructed from glued laminated timber. The structure includes fish-bellied girders with spans of over 40.5 m. The high roof loads necessitated the fish-bellied girders being laminated to a maximum height of 2.83 m.

At the outer axes, the columns are fixed in the transverse direction of the hall; in the central axis, they are cantilever columns. Bracing is provided in the longitudinal direction of the hall.

Implementation

Timber crane runway girder

A particularly rare feature of the design and construction of this production hall: even the crane runway beams were made of timber.

An overhead crane now moves heavy loads across the two hall bays on two timber crane runway beams, whilst a semi-gantry crane does the same on a single timber crane runway beam.
