The Mill

The Queenstown Sports Performance Hub, also known as The Mill, is a state-of-the-art centre for sports, rehabilitation, and healthcare. As the largest private sports facility of its kind in New Zealand, The Mill offers visitors over 2,500 m² of top-tier training and recovery options in a unique setting.
The innovative architecture blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The use of mass timber emphasizes the commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly, and health-promoting construction.
Task

Design and Sustainability
in Unison

The Mill combines health and sustainability in a groundbreaking concept. The Sports Performance Hub focuses on passive ventilation, maximizing natural daylight, and CO2-efficient construction.

WIEHAG was responsible for creating the 3D model and manufacturing 250 m³ of laminated timber, including beams and supports for the roof structure.

Design Concept

The design establishes a strong connection to the surrounding landscape and context. The use of mass timber allows us to achieve a dynamic floor plan and flexible spaces, ensuring that the Sports Performance Hub not only meets its functional requirements, but also serves as a model for sustainable and health-conscious architecture.
