Riding Hall Moargut

Salzburg's five-star Hotel Moargut is investing in a new indoor riding arena to enable guests to enjoy a horse riding experience whatever the weather.
The riding arena roof was designed using a delicate, lightweight framework with steel tension straps.
Task

A new building matching the hotel and landscape

The new riding arena roof forms the new northern end of the moargut family and children's hotel in Grossarl.
The client and architects specified that the riding arena, with its form and materials, should blend harmoniously into the existing surroundings. Furthermore, the new building should create a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

Implementation

A lightweight truss
with steel tension bands

The 20 x 40 m riding arena is now covered by the new 27 x 43 m riding arena roof. It is made of spruce and larch wood.

The main load-bearing elements are parallel-chord glulam girders, spanned by steel tension rods and supported by compression braces. Parallel girders extend from the spanned girders. The maximum center distance of the girders is 4.25 m. In axis A, the girders rest on short steel columns welded to a clamped reinforced concrete wall. In axes B and C, the girders rest on glulam hinged columns. In axis 1, a glulam gable girder is constructed, resting on several glulam hinged columns.

The secondary load-bearing layer is a cross-laminated timber panel, which transfers the vertical loads to the girders and is designed as a disc. The wind loads are transferred to the subsoil via cross-laminated timber panels, wall bracing, and the clamped reinforced concrete walls. The construction project was completed within six weeks.
