A milestone project for Ingolstadt: a multi-storey car park with an ecological design. The completed timber multi-storey car park sets a new benchmark for sustainable infrastructure.

WIEHAG was commissioned with the production, delivery and assembly of all timber components and façade elements.

The task

The timber car park

The city of Ingolstadt commissioned the architecture and engineering firm PBB from Ingolstadt to plan and realise a four-storey car park in timber construction directly opposite the Saturn Arena.

The construction and facade are to be made of wood. In addition, photovoltaic panels will be installed on the spiral ramp and a green roof will be created. The rainwater is to be collected in a cyster and reused.

The implementation

Sustainable Infrastructure

The multi-storey car park has a two-bay design with a floor area of 39 m x 109 m. There are five parking levels on each side, one above the other, offering space for a total of around 500 cars. The round entrance and exit ramps are located at the front and the stairwell, including the building services, is opposite.

The 85 metre long timber construction is located in between. The rod-shaped components, such as columns, ceiling and roof beams, are made of glulam (GLT), while the flat components, such as ceiling and roof panels, are made of cross-laminated timber (CLT).

Functional design element
Larch façade

The facade consists of elemental steel frames into which larch boards are screwed. The geometry and arrangement of the larch boards keeps most of the precipitation away from the main supporting structure. To this end, irrigation tests were carried out in advance and the results were incorporated into the design. However, the facade also retains its open character, which means that any moisture inside the car park can be easily removed at any time.

In this construction project, timber construction scored highly in terms of assembly time thanks to its high degree of prefabrication and assembly-friendly connection principles. The assembly only took 2.5 weeks per storey.
