This year marks the start of construction for the six-storey Sun office development, designed as a hybrid timber structure. Its sophisticated architecture and forward-looking technology position Sun as a flagship project for sustainable construction in Munich, targeting prestigious certifications including DGNB Platinum, DGNB Climate Positive, WiredScore and WELL Gold.
A TIMBER HYBRID BUILDING
with Sustainability at Its Core
The new Sun office building in Munich’s Berg am Laim district represents a forward-looking workplace where sustainability – and especially the use of timber – takes centre stage. WIEHAG is responsible for the detailed design, fabrication and assembly of the structural system, including glulam beams and columns, timber-concrete composite ribbed slabs, wall elements and CLT slabs. The building’s hybrid timber construction minimises the use of reinforced concrete and significantly reduces emissions already during the construction phase. As the primary building material, timber plays a key role in achieving an excellent carbon footprint. At the same time, it creates a warm and inviting interior atmosphere, contributing to a high level of comfort and well-being.
Spanning around 27,500 m², Sun offers flexible, customisable workspaces along with generous outdoor areas such as balconies, terraces and green roofs. A central green courtyard fosters interaction and connects architecture with nature.
The building’s orientation follows the path of the sun and consistently leverages renewable energy: photovoltaic modules on façades and roofs cover a large share of the energy demand, supported by an intelligent energy management system with storage solutions based on recycled batteries. A reversible air-source heat pump ensures resource-efficient heating and cooling.
